5 Must See Sights on the Great Ocean Road

With over 200kms of the most beautiful coastline Australia has to offer, it’s hard to narrow down the must see sights on the Great Ocean Road to just five, but we’re up to the task. Make sure you add these sights to your Great Ocean Road itinerary:

  1. Marvel at the Twelve Apostles – it was pretty obvious we were going to start with these! Australian Icons, these limestone stacks were once part of mainland cliffs some 10-20 million years ago. They are best viewed at sunrise and sunset, where their colours change before your eyes. You can view the Twelve Apostles from one of the Great Ocean Walks <>, or via one of the many tours available from the region, including by helicopter or scenic flight. The Twelve Apostles aren’t only impressive above sea level – the water below them is home to some of the best diving in Australia, the greatest diversity of invertebrates on limestone reef in Victoria.
  2. Descend the Gibson Steps – make your way down the 86 steps (dependent on weather and tides) to the beach and be dwarfed by the 70m high vertical cliffs above you. You’ll have a perfect view of the two limestone stacks, nicknamed Gog and Magog, and make time to fish for salmon, sweep or trevally.
  3. Spot a whale – there are a number of spots along the Great Ocean Road coastline where you might spot a whale or two if you’re travelling in winter or spring. 25 different types of whales migrate past this area, including humpback whales. Stop by Warrnambool, Portland and Apollo Bay for the best chance of spotting these majestic creatures.
  4. Chase a waterfall – the Great Ocean Road region is home to some pretty spectacular waterfalls, including Phantom Falls, lower Kalima Falls, Beauchamp Falls, Erskine Falls, Hopetoun Falls, and Hopkins Falls. Each of these waterfalls is stunning in its own right, and each holds a special secret. At the lower Kalima Falls, you can make your way behind the waterfalls and meditate by the pool, Hopkins Falls is home to baby eels who throw themselves over the edge during their migration and Hopetoun Falls features a towering Californian redwood plantation.

  5. Sample the delights at the Great Ocean Road Chocolatery and Icecreamery – this one will make the kids (and big kids) happy! Not only are there free chocolate and icecream tastings, but the venue is set on 15 acres where you can immerse yourself in the chocolate making experience.
