The central part of the Murray region includes the riverfront towns of Yarrawonga, Cobram and Echuca. The historic river port of Echuca was once Australia's busiest inland port during the days of steamboat transport in the mid 1800s. Today, many of the towns along the Murray River in this area are holiday destinations due to the stable climate and water activities including river cruises, boating, fishing and swimming.
The High Country region is located in the north-east of Victoria. It is an area that features national parks, Victoria's highest mountains, lakes, snow resorts, vineyards and a rich history including gold discovery, cattlemen and notorious bushrangers such as Ned Kelly. Rich wine growing areas and locally produced cheeses and smallgoods are a feature of towns in the Rutherglen, Wangaratta and Milawa area.
Beautiful holiday towns along the Ovens River, including Bright and Myrtleford, offer an idyllic setting surrounded by mountains, forest and rivers, with their streets lined with deciduous trees that are transformed into blazing colours during autumn. The High Country region is home to most of Victoria's snow and ski resorts including Mount Buller, Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo and Mount Hotham which has an airport where direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney are available during the snow season.
